Mini-Reunion July 25-August 1, 2008
Yurt Build at Joe Hollis' Mountain Garden Herbs Farm
Burnsville NC

Joe Hollis' Mountain Garden Herbs Farm is based on the principal of Paradise Gardening in which the gardener and the garden live together in ecological balance. This yurt will provide housing for interns. Joe Hollis

JoAnna Woo Allen organized this project, coordinating people, funding, food and housing. Thanks Jo!

Here is JoAnna's
WONDERFUL JOURNAL
of this Yurt Build

Wooden Yurt originator, founder of the Yurt Foundation, and experiential teacher Bill Coperthwaite directed the yurt assembly. He was extremely patient with our lack of building expertise!

Special thanks to former Malaysian students Chia Boon Tai and Robin Li, for their very generous financial contributions to this project; to the Knowltons and to Geri Albright for starting a "cedar shingle fund" for the yurt; and to Dave Warner for bringing his table saw and tools.

The Props assist the House
Until the House is built
And then the Props withdraw
And adequate, erect,
The House support itself
And cease to recollect
The Auger and the Carpenter —
Just such a retrospect
Hath the perfected Life —
A past of Plank and Nail
And slowness
— then the Scaffolds drop
Affirming it a Soul.

Emily Dickinson

Folks came and went throughout the week contributing as they were able. Here are a couple of group photos (click each for larger image).

Members of the local community joined us at the Celo Inn and Celo Community Center for evening activities. These included a lovely dinner, and slide show presentations by Bill Coperthwaite (yurt building) and Mike Saba (children's health worldwide)

Mountain Garden Herbs Interns prepared a delicious vegetarian lunch for the whole crew each day.

And Last but not Least
